Edit a Google Form Response After Submitting (2026)
In this guide
The Default: Submitted Means Final
Out of the box, a Google Forms submission cannot be changed by anyone — not the respondent, and not even the owner. This surprises people on both sides:
- Respondents who spot a typo a minute after submitting have no way back in.
- Owners who find an obvious mistake in a response cannot fix it — Forms offers view and delete, nothing else. (Editing the row in the linked spreadsheet changes the sheet, not the form’s stored response.)
The editing setting gives respondents a correction path; it does not add an owner-side answer editor.
Turn On Response Editing (from iPhone)
- Open the form at forms.google.com in Safari and tap Settings.
- Expand Responses and toggle Allow response editing on.
- Strongly recommended: also enable Send responders a copy of their response — the emailed copy carries the edit link, giving respondents a way back after they close the confirmation screen.
From then on, every submission ends with an Edit your response link. Reopening it shows the submitted answers, editable, with the same Submit button.
One habit worth copying: state the policy in the form description — “You can edit your answers until [date] using the link on your confirmation screen.” Test that the announced cutoff is enforced before sharing the form.
What Editing Means for Your Data
- Check the updated response and its linked Sheet after a test edit. Verify row synchronization and any downstream reports in your actual workflow.
- Test the correction cutoff. Do not assume a deadline tool handles existing edit links exactly like new submissions. Verify the actual result and disable response editing when your policy requires it.
- Pairing with Limit to 1 response gives each signed-in person exactly one revisable submission — the classic sign-up sheet pattern. (This requires sign-in, but Google says usernames are not recorded for the owner unless email collection is enabled. Review the other anonymity risks.)
- Watching responses that keep changing is where notifications earn their keep — test whether the chosen tool detects edited answers; do not assume a new-submission alert also covers changes.
If you review incoming responses from your phone a lot, our Forms for Google Drive iOS app shows each submission in a native viewer with push alerts on new activity — considerably calmer than refreshing the Responses tab in Safari to see whether anything changed.
When Editing Is Off and Someone Needs a Fix
Coordinate a correction with the respondent. Use Responses → Individual to identify the record, retain any information you need before deciding to delete it, and arrange a replacement if appropriate. Deletion is irreversible in Forms and may require separate cleanup in a linked sheet; do not delete first and assume resubmission is guaranteed.
Review corrections without confusing them with new submissions
On iPhone and iPad. Forms for Google Drive gives the form owner a mobile way to review responses. It does not override the owner’s response-editing policy or give respondents permission they do not have.
With the Workspace add-on. Form Notifications by pipiform can send a customized acknowledgement for a new submission, including instructions for requesting a correction. Do not assume editing an existing response triggers the same workflow; test that behavior before promising an updated email.

The app and Workspace add-ons are separate pipiform products. Forms for Google Drive is US$59.99/year with a 3-day trial; check the App Store offer for your region. Form Notifications’ limited free mode allows 20 emails/day; paid features and recipient options depend on the plan. See current product pricing before subscribing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a respondent edit their answer after submitting?
The owner must enable Allow response editing in Settings → Responses. Keep the Edit your response link shown after submission and test it with the actual access settings. A response copy may provide a return link when configured. Confirm any announced editing deadline.
I lost the confirmation screen. How do I get back to my editable response?
Check the response-copy email if it was enabled, and any saved edit link. The ordinary responder URL is not the same as your personal edit link. If you cannot recover a working route, contact the owner and agree on a correction; do not assume the owner can edit the stored answer directly.
Can the form owner edit a respondent's submitted answers?
The normal Forms response viewer does not provide a direct owner-side editor for someone else’s answers. Changing a linked Sheet does not change the stored Forms response. Coordinate correction with the respondent; before deletion, preserve any needed data and understand that Forms deletion is irreversible.
Does editing a response change its timestamp or send a new notification?
Check both the stored response and linked Sheet after a test edit. Timestamp, row synchronization and notification behavior depend on the actual workflow and integrations. Do not assume a new-submission trigger runs again for an edit; test the specific notification tool.
Does 'Allow response editing' work together with 'Limit to 1 response'?
These settings can be combined to let a signed-in respondent revise a response. One-response limits require Google sign-in; Google says usernames are not recorded for the owner unless email collection is enabled. Test the link, account and correction window you intend to support.
Can respondents edit answers after the form closes?
Do not promise an edit cutoff solely from the new-response closing control or an add-on deadline. Test an existing edit link after closing and review Allow response editing and responder access. Set and verify the controls needed for your correction policy.
